Changsha's total import and export value reached 62.96 billion CNY in the first quarter of 2025, up 4.7% compared to the same period last year, according to statistics from the Xingsha Customs Authority. Of the total, exports stood at 42.6 billion CNY, growing 20.8%, while imports were 20.36 billion CNY.
General trade and processing trade showed relatively rapid growth. In the first quarter, Changsha's general trade reached 53.36 billion CNY, an increase of 9.1%, and accounted for 84.8% of the city's total import and export value in the same period. Processing trade expanded 7.9% to 4.91 billion CNY, making up 7.8%. Trade via bonded logistics stood at 3.61 billion CNY, accounting for 5.7%.
Private enterprises and production-oriented enterprises demonstrated enhanced vitality. In the first quarter, the number of enterprises in Changsha with actual foreign trade performance rose 10.6% compared to the same period last year. Among them, imports and exports by private enterprises totaled 50.81 billion CNY, up 8.1%, and accounted for 80.7% of the city's total import and export value in the same period.
Trade and economic cooperation with emerging markets is becoming increasingly close. Changsha's trade with ASEAN countries amounted to 12.2 billion CNY, an increase of 25.8%, and accounted for 19.4% of the city's total import and export value in the same period. Its trade with African countries surged 126% to 6.54 billion CNY, making up 10.4%. Its trade with Latin American countries totaled 7.3 billion CNY, growing 4.3%, with the trade value with Bolivia and Argentina increasing 258.2% and 231.5%, respectively.
The expansion of unilateral opening to least-developed countries has shown significant results, with imports from and exports to these countries (45 in total) growing 106.7% to 3.4 billion CNY. In particular, trade with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Myanmar, Guinea, and Laos jumped more than two times on average. During the same period, trade with countries involving in the Belt and Road Initiative totaled 39.97 billion CNY, growing 18.9%. Imports from and exports to other RCEP member countries amounted to 19.61 billion CNY, increasing 12.1%. Trade with other BRICS countries (10 in total) expanded 11.5% to 13.78 billion CNY.Exports of specialty products showed robust growth. In the first quarter, Changsha's exports of mechanical and electrical products reached 26.46 billion CNY, up 12.5%, and accounted for 62.1% of the city's total export value in the same period. Exports of steel products soared 737.4% to 5.26 billion CNY, making up 12.3%. Exports of labor-intensive products expanded 7.6% to 3.15 billion CNY, accounting for 7.4%.
Exports of agricultural products rose 13.8% to 1.19 billion CNY, representing 2.8%. In terms of exports of specialty products, construction machinery exports reached 7.18 billion CNY, growing 4.1%. Specifically, special-purpose vehicles and bulldozers increased 11.8% and 14.3%, respectively.
Exports of the "new three" products, namely lithium-ion batteries, photovoltaic products, and electric vehicles, soared 108.5% to 2.43 billion CNY. In particular, exports of electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries reached 1.19 billion CNY and 1.13 billion CNY, increasing 73.4% and 206.8%, respectively. Fireworks and firecrackers were exported to 71 countries and regions, with the total export value expanding 39% to 910 million CNY. In particular, exports to the United States amounted to 450 million CNY, growing 48.3%, while exports to the European Union reached 150 million CNY, up 62.1%.
